Buying Rooftop RTU Support Frames

RTU support frames are coordinated to the unit footprint, manufacturer support locations, service clearances, and the building framing below. This scope is appropriate for new units, replacement units with changed footprints, and projects that need support beyond a conventional curb.

Equipment Supported

  • Packaged rooftop units
  • Make-up air units
  • Dedicated outdoor-air systems
  • RTU accessories identified in the project documents

What information is needed for pricing?

To evaluate a project-specific quote request, provide:

  • Current RTU submittal with operating weight, curb or rail layout, and service-clearance diagram
  • Roof framing plan, replacement-unit comparison when applicable, and required frame geometry
  • Project location, requested-on-site date, and current drawing set
  • Required support elevations, clearances, connection details, and design criteria from the responsible project team
  • Finish specification and any inspection, documentation, packaging, or shipping requirements

Engineering Disclaimer

Final design, anchorage, loading, wind, seismic, roof, and installation requirements may require review by the project engineer, licensed design professional, equipment manufacturer, or other qualified party. Pricing is subject to confirmation of dimensions, loads, site conditions, finish requirements, delivery requirements, and final scope.

Fabrication and Finishes

Exposed frames can be quoted with hot-dip galvanizing or a specified coating system. Primer alone should be selected only when it aligns with the project specification and exposure; finish repairs after field work are not included unless stated.

What Drives Cost?

There is no reliable standard price without project information. The principal pricing variables for this scope are:

  • RTU size and reactions
  • Adapter geometry for replacement equipment
  • Frame elevation and cantilevers
  • Connection and access constraints
  • Finish and delivery timing

Delivery Considerations

Confirm roof loading and crane logistics with the project team before selecting shipping sections. USA Structural will identify proposed piece sizes in the fabrication scope when shipment constraints are known.

Scope Exclusions to Confirm

These items are excluded unless the accepted quote expressly includes them:

  • RTU, factory curb, isolation rail, controls, and mechanical installation unless listed
  • Professional design, sealed calculations, and engineer-of-record approval unless expressly included
  • Roofing, waterproofing, penetrations, flashing, restoration, and roof curbs unless expressly included
  • Field measurement, demolition, crane service, unloading, erection, and field welding unless expressly included

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a frame adapt a new RTU to an existing support layout?

Adapter framing can be reviewed when the existing conditions, new-unit reactions, and responsible professional's requirements are documented.

Are service clearances checked?

Supplied clearance requirements are used for coordination, but the equipment manufacturer and project professionals remain responsible for final clearance approval.

Are finish, freight, and installation included?

Not automatically. The accepted quote must state the finish, freight terms, unloading, installation, and every other included responsibility.
